The total solar eclipse over the Faroe Islands, 20 March 2015. Some estimated 8000 tourists had arrived here to watch the spectacular event. The Faroe Islands as well as the Arctic archipelago off northern Norway were the best places in Europe to see the total eclipse whereas spectators in the more southern parts of Europe, northern and eastern Asia and northern and western Africa could only view a partial eclipse. A solar eclipse occurs when the moon moves between the earth and the sun, which is then obscured.
