A migrant from Syria cries as she stands with her children on a field after crossing into Hungary from the border with Serbia near the village of Roszke, September 5, 2015. Austria and Germany threw open their borders to thousands of exhausted migrants on Saturday, bussed to the Hungarian border by a right-wing government that had tried to stop them but was overwhelmed by the sheer numbers reaching Europe's frontiers. Left to walk the last yards into Austria, rain-soaked migrants, many of them refugees from Syria's civil war, were whisked by train and shuttle bus to Vienna, where many said they were resolved to continue on to Germany.

Kurdish Syrian refugees carry their belongings after crossing the Turkish-Syrian border near the southeastern town of Suruc in Sanliurfa province in this September 25, 2014 file photo. Reuters photographers have chronicled Kurdish refugee crises over the years. In 1991 Srdjan Zivulovic documented refugees in Cukurca who had escaped a military operation by Saddam Hussein's government in Iraq aimed at "Arabising" Kurdish areas in the north. Hundreds of thousands fled into Turkey and Iran. Images shot in recent months show familiar scenes as crowds of people flee Islamic State militants in Syria. There are as many as 30 million Kurds, spread through Turkey, Iraq, Syria and Iran. Most Kurds are Sunni Muslims, but tend to feel more loyalty to their Kurdishness, rather than their religion.

A young migrant carries food, near tents at a makeshift camp amongst railway tracks, at the border between Greece and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) near Idomeni, Northern Greece, 15 March 2016. Greek Prime Minister Alxis Tsipras on 15 March called on refugees to allow the Athens government to move them from the Idomeni camp to other reception centers, stressing that the borders are closed and will not be reopened in the near future. Greece has registered more than 44,000 migrants that are currently trapped due to entry restrictions already imposed by Macedonia in recent months, by denying entry to all those who are considered economic migrants, prohibiting the passage of Afghans, and finally denying entry to all Syrians and Iraqis who are not from combat areas.
