Dr. Mostefa Souag, acting Director General of Al Jazeera Media Network said the 12th edition of Al Jazeera International Documentary Film Festival will be postponed till 2017, due to heavy activities on celebrating the 20th anniversary.

The last edition of the Al Jazeera International Documentary Film Festival was themed "Horizons" to express the progressiveness of Al Jazeera in both the content and the look. on the fringe of the festival, a variety of events and activities were held including seminars on documentary filmmaking industry, and discussing distinguished documentaries from around the world.

The festival used to set a special theme every year; the first of which was "Welcome" in 2005, to indicate the beginning of the festival journey. The second edition's theme was "Communication" to call for cross-cultural communication.

"Peace be upon You" was the third edition's theme to encourage embracing others and spreading peace and brotherhood among all people regardless of their ethnicity, religion or culture.

In 2008 the festival raised the "Together" theme, which meant to enhance collaboration and cooperation. "Five Years of Hope" was for optimism, while the 2010's edition was called "Freedom" in the full sense of the word; be it intellectual, political or social.

The 7th edition of the festival carried the emblem of "Dialogue" to embrace others.

In 2010, the "Future" was the theme to open new channels to the promising future with hope.

The 9th edition was themed "Windows" to reaffirm the openness of the festival to the creativity of talented people from around the world; and the 10th edition's theme was "Steps" sending the message that the first step taken by the festival has reached many "Steps".
